Meet Ha’Penny Executive Chef Ralph Motta

Indulge in the culinary genius of Chef Ralph Motta, a self-taught luminary driven by the vibrant flavors and traditions native to St. Croix, nestled in the heart of the United States Virgin Islands. Inspired by the island’s rich history and a blend of cultures, Chef Motta passionately curates what he lovingly refers to as modern Crucian cuisine.

From a young age, Chef Motta was steeped in the wisdom of culinary traditions. Reflecting on his upbringing, he fondly recalls, “Growing up on St. Croix, I was immersed in the essence of local cuisine.” He treasures family heirlooms like his grandmother Claire Motta’s mortar and pestle, essential in crafting the signature “pound seasoning” found in every savory Crucian dish. These heirlooms, alongside his mother’s cherished silver mixing bowls, instill a deep sense of heritage, driving Chef Motta to honor tradition while innovating for the future.

Trained originally as a fine artist at Pratt Institute, Chef Motta seamlessly blends his artistic flair with culinary expertise, exploring a fusion of traditional and contemporary techniques. Fueled by a profound passion for both gastronomy and artistry, Chef Motta’s creations effortlessly marry the modern allure of contemporary abstraction with the timeless essence of his cultural roots, resulting in a fusion of Caribbean, French, and American influences.

Embark on a culinary journey at Ha’Penny Beach Club, where Chef Motta serves as the Executive Chef. Additionally, Chef Motta leads Motta Cuisine, a bespoke catering venture established in 2014. Recognized as a symbol of culinary excellence, Chef Motta was named the Culinary Ambassador for the US Virgin Islands by the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism for consecutive years, in 2017 and 2018, proudly sharing the gastronomic heritage of St. Croix with the world.
