About Ha’penny Bay Beach Club
In the mid-1950s, a visionary dream took root as 25 couples united their resources, each contributing $5,000 to establish the Ha’Penny Bay Corporation. This collective investment secured nearly a hundred acres of pristine land, featuring picturesque beachfront along Ha’Penny Bay. Their vision materialized into the Ha’Penny Bay Beach Club, which opened its doors in 1961.
Initially, ambitious plans were made to subdivide the vast acreage into lucrative lots for sale. However, fate intervened, leaving the lots unsold and bankruptcy looming. Yet, through remarkable collaboration with the original landowner, the Club extricated itself from the corporation, assuming its share of the mortgage. The unsold land, approximately 90 acres, eventually found new owners as undeveloped acreage.
Despite early setbacks, the Club thrived. By 1967, the need for expanded dining facilities led to the conversion of dressing rooms into the structure now housing the present facilities. Financed by the sale of 5% bonds to members, this expansion marked a significant milestone, with the retirement of these bonds reinforcing the Club’s financial stability.
In June 1976, a devastating fire destroyed the main clubhouse. Undeterred, members unanimously voted to rebuild. With sufficient insurance coverage and cash reserves, the Club swiftly reconstructed, unveiling a new clubhouse in March 1977. Throughout the process, the tight-knit community rallied, hosting dinners in fellow members’ homes.
Over the years, the Club faced challenges, including beach erosion worsened by hurricanes. Innovative solutions, such as rip-rap walls and reinforced bulkheads, were implemented, fortifying the Club against environmental threats and enhancing its facilities.
Today, the Ha’Penny Beach Club stands as a testament to resilience, camaraderie, and enduring seaside allure, embodying its rich history amidst the beauty of Ha’Penny Bay.
